These tigers are Bengal tigers. According to the keepers, there is quite a
large population of these in the wild, around 5,000. This is because the
Indian government is taking great care to preserve them, with special areas set
aside etc. This is, of course, good for the Indian economy, because of the
eco-tourism industry. Some of the most endangered sub species of tigers
are the Sumatran and Siberian. Apparently the Siberian is faring worse
under democracy than it was under the old regime!
