Tokyo New Year 2002

Celebrating New Year in Tokyo was a wonderful experience.  It is the most important holiday of the year, the pinnacle of which is a visit to a temple or shrine for the midnight countdown.  We went to Zojo-ji temple near Tokyo Tower where there were tons of people celebrating.  At the stroke of midnight everyone let off balloons with their wishes attached and the temple bells were rung 108 times.

We started off our evening at Roy's restaurant for a delicious dinner.  Then went on to a salsa club where we had a lesson - I rediscovered my problem distinguishing between left and right!  We stayed there for some dancing and then headed off to Zojo-ji to be in time for midnight.  Wishes were made and sake drank as we watched the good luck charms from last year being burnt in a huge bonfire (check out the movie).
