Entrance to Chinatown on Grant Avenue. Hotels were very expensive in San
Francisco, so we stayed in two places. They both turned out to be across
the road from each other, about 100 yards from this gate! Chinatown is
really wonderful with loads of little knick-knack shops and great dim sum.
Alcatraz prison. We didn't go over to see it - after all, we'd seen Clint
Eastward in 'Escape from Alcatraz' right? We'd already seen enough of the
inside!
Lombard St - the crookedest street in San Francisco. Not suitable for
buses or trailers!
Coit Tower. This used to be a lookout post. When ships were sighted,
the sentry would use flags in a type of semaphore to let the people of the town
know what kind of ship and where it was docking. The system was made
obsolete after 30 years, by the invention of the telegraph.
Trans America Pyramid. Cool modern architecture which looks great
juxtaposed with some of the older buildings in the city.
There are murals everywhere, even on cars!
San Francisco MOMA. There were some excellent exhibits when we
visited. We especially liked one called 'Art in the Digital Age'.
The artists were developing some really interesting themes, using all kinds of
multimedia technology. Glen's favourite was a maze made from transparent
films containing screen shots and television screens from millenium eve.
Sunday afternoon in Buena Yerba square, near MOMA.
Roberta near the fountains in Buena Yerba square.
Golden Gate Bridge through the fog. It would roll in from the sea in
bands, leaving the rest of the sky blue and sunny.
Driving across the bridge in the fog.
The coast road between Carmel and Big Sur.
Glen and Roberta at the Triton Hotel just before leaving for the airport.
